It scored my career a 10 out of 100.
I'd just come off a 12-hour burn. Rocket on coordination. Groot on execution. Buddy on QC. The AI team delivered what a typical engineering organisation would book as four to six weeks of senior work.
Thirteen merged PRs. Four waves. Zero rollbacks. Zero regressions.
I asked Groot to write an honest assessment. Not the highlight reel. The comparison. I sat with it. Three weeks of senior-team work. Compressed into a single Wednesday.
Then I looked back at my own track record.
Twenty-five years of C-suite. Multiple turnarounds. Hundreds of millions on P&L. Board wins. Exit wins. Transformation wins. Real, hard work that real, hard teams executed brilliantly.
Every project I'm proud of — and I am still proud — was paced to a world that no longer exists.
A normal "fast" project was a quarter. A "lightning" sprint was six weeks. A "wartime" delivery was a month on emergency footing, paid in burnout and divorces.
Wednesday was 14 hours. No weekends. No burnout. No divorces.
Score my career against today, not the world I trained in? 10 out of 100.
The gap nobody has language for yet
This isn't a humblebrag. This is the gap that's opened between what's possible and what most organisations still optimise for.
The CFO who took twelve weeks to close an integration. They were good. Today, that's Tuesday morning.
The CTO who delivered a platform rebuild in seven months. They were exceptional. Today, that's a long weekend.
The transformation CEO who saved their company $40M in two years. That was me. Today, the same outcome lands in months. Maybe weeks.
We aren't being out-thought. We're being out-paced by an order of magnitude we don't have the language for yet.
The multiplier on the multiplier
What did Groot identify as the multiplier?
Not "AI is smart." That isn't the story.
Of the five structural advantages Groot listed, three were about how the humans set up the work. Pre-authorisation. Pre-soaked scope. Thirty-minute feedback cadence instead of weekly standups.
The AI was the multiplier. The protocol was the multiplier on the multiplier. And the protocol is human.
The meetings, the handoffs, the approval chains, the "let me get back to you," the Slack threads that die at 6pm and resume at 9am — that isn't process anymore. That's tax. And the tax rate just went up.
The executives who win the next five years won't be the ones with the smartest AI. They'll be the ones with the cleanest protocol around it.
The work that earned my old scores was real. But that was yesterday. Today is a new world. And the scoreboard just changed.
Built with AI. For my kids and yours.
